The Comedy of North Beach

September 26 plus October 2026 · Verified from each venue's own listings · Front page · Music · Comedy · Festival map · 365 · Channels · October calendar · Database

Yes — there is enough comedy in greater North Beach for a section of its own: four rooms on the strip and its edges, roughly forty named acts, and a hundred and fifty-odd October seats to fill. This page is that section.

Comedy in this neighborhood works the edges. A club stage at Battery, a speakeasy beneath the Palace, punk-room variety on Broadway, and a Columbus corridor club just past the sign for the wharf. The paper lists what the rooms posted, quotes what they or their acts published, and leaves the rest to the rooms.

The Rooms That Joke

Punch Line SF

444 Battery St

The city's club-stage comedy room at the edge of the neighborhood. Nine October headliners across 28 shows through October 23 — the final week of October was not yet posted at verification.

The Setup at the Palace Theater

643 Beach St, entered through the Sam Lee Laundry

Speakeasy stand-up beneath the Palace — Saturday nights at 9 PM, on the Chinatown edge of the neighborhood.

Mabuhay Gardens

435 Broadway

The room where the punk-era comedy nights first mixed with music. In October: Laid Off on the 10th, and Lit Laugh Lyric IV: Haunted Edition on the 16th. The mime weekend — The Submarine Show and the Ensemble Creation Workshop — closed September.

Cobb's Comedy Club

915 Columbus Ave

Just beyond the strip's northern edge, on the Columbus corridor. Fifteen named October headliners, from its own calendar — newly verified for this section, not yet on the festival map.

The October Schedule, Act by Act

12 named acts across 31 dated comedy events on the strip's own listings — the Punch Line, the Setup at the Palace, and the Mab's comedy nights. Performer names exactly as the rooms post them.

Just Beyond the Strip — Cobb's, 915 Columbus Ave

Fifteen named October headliners at Cobb's, from the club's own calendar, verified September 26. Cobb's sits on the Columbus corridor at the neighborhood's northern edge — close enough to walk, far enough that the strip claims no credit.

The Quotes, With the Shows They Belong To

Up to three quotes per act, from authenticated sources only — the act's own page, the room's own listing, or press reprinted by one of them — each naming the show it relates to. The Punch Line posts headliner names without descriptions, so its acts carry no quote cards; the gap is the room's, and noted.

The Setup

“The best speakeasy comedy experience in San Francisco.”

— The Setup, the show's own page, for its Palace Theater shows, including October 2

“Ali Wong cut their teeth here. Sheng Wang built his voice here.”

— The Setup, the show's own page, for its Palace Theater shows, including October 2

“This city has always been where the best comics do their most dangerous work, and The Setup carries that tradition at The Palace Theater and The Lost Church.”

— The Setup, the show's own page, for its Palace Theater shows, including October 2

The Submarine Show (closed September 26)

“Two intrepid explorers crash their submarine, and that's only the beginning.”

— Mabuhay Gardens, the room's own page, for The Submarine Show, the September 26 closing night of the mime weekend

“Nonstop, breathless, and gloriously absurd — physical comedy at its most fearless, and not a word is spoken.”

— Mabuhay Gardens, the room's own page, for The Submarine Show, the September 26 closing night of the mime weekend

“Since its 2009 debut, this award-winning comedy has toured the world to rave reviews and standing ovations.”

— Mabuhay Gardens, the room's own page, for The Submarine Show, the September 26 closing night of the mime weekend

What the Press Says, and of What

Published press reviews, quoted verbatim, each naming the show or special it reviewed. Where a review is mixed, the mix is kept. Where no published review was found, the act is named in the gaps below rather than left to silence.

“When she gives her observations room to breathe, pulling at the thread until convention comes undone, she shines.”

— The Skinny, on Leslie Liao's show at Oran Mor, Glasgow

“Liao's warm and engaging presence makes for an enjoyable hour.”

— The Guardian, on Leslie Liao's Netflix is a Joke stand-up hour, March 2024

“Kilmartin's own voice is crude, acute and pretty mean.”

— The Guardian, on Laurie Kilmartin at the Soho Theatre, London, July 2026

“Kilmartin says what she wants and she does so with precision and wit.”

— Rebellious Magazine, on Laurie Kilmartin's new special

“With a mischievous smile, Jones launched into her routine, combining sharp wit with unfiltered insights on her five months of sobriety.”

— Westword, on Hannah Jones headlining Comedy Works, Denver

“Nori Reed is a powerhouse, an icon, and a true joy to witness.”

— Gold Comedy, in its One to Watch profile of Nori Reed

“He's also very funny and honing his stand-up craft.”

— New South Essays, on Aaron Weber's special Signature Dish

“There are great lines and bits throughout I Don't Mean to Brag… but overall, the hour struggles to sustain its footing.”

— Exclaim!, on Heather McDonald's special I Don't Mean to Brag — the review is mixed, and kept mixed

“Wakim is a shining member of the American comedy scene.”

— All That Dazzles, on Emil Wakim's My Way at the Soho Theatre

“Nicole Byer Just Gave Us One of the Year's Best Stand-up Specials… It remains a knockout special.”

— Paste, on Nicole Byer's special BBW (Big Beautiful Weirdo)

“What makes Pizza Mind shine isn't so much the stand-up but the way she reframes her performance.”

— The Comic's Comic, on Sasheer Zamata's special Pizza Mind

“Gavin's comedic prowess lies in her ability to challenge gender norms.”

— The Guardian, on Ashley Gavin at the Glee Club, Glasgow, May 2026

“It's well-crafted without feeling crafted at all… A big part of Davis' appeal is how lived-in and organic his material often feels.”

— Las Vegas Review-Journal, on Rocky Dale Davis's Las Vegas show

“It is in these moments of vulnerability that Rajapaksa shines, and offers something which shows a bit more depth from a comic and goes beyond a cheap laugh.”

— The Skinny, on Vidura Bandara Rajapaksa at the Edinburgh Fringe, Monkey Barrel

“It almost doesn't matter that Yakov Smirnoff is a marginal comedian with thin material largely engineered off one basic premise.”

— Los Angeles Times, on Yakov Smirnoff's show, March 1989 — the paper keeps its old verdicts on the record

“She was witty and amusing.”

— Digital Journal, on Daniela Mora's set at Joanne Trattoria, New York

The Gaps, Stated Plainly

No future dates posted, as of September 26, 2026: Brian Babylon, Comedy Allstars, George Civeris, Emil Wakim, Vidura Bandara Rajapaksa (the Paradise Gothic Tour's own live-shows page carries no dated listing past this month), Ed Larson and Billy Wayne Davis as a duo, and The Setup, whose San Francisco series continues but publishes no dated events beyond this month.

No published press review found: Ray Lau and Sam Salem. The Punch Line posts headliner names without descriptions, so its acts carry no quote cards from the room.

Calendar edges: the Punch Line's posted schedule ends October 23; Cobb's posted headliners end October 25. What follows is the rooms' to post, and this paper will carry it when they do.

Open mics round out the neighborhood's comedy floor: Cobb's runs a Monday open mic, and The Saloon's calendar lists a free 4 PM session. A Halloween special — The Deplorables of Comedy — is posted at a Fame Venue in the neighborhood. Times and lineups verify as the rooms post them.
